Mastering Single Unit Restorative Cases with the iTero® Intraoral Scanner

Efficiency and accuracy are paramount when it comes to restorative cases. The iTero® intraoral scanner is a powerful tool that simplifies the process of scanning and charting for single unit restorations.

Key Steps for Scanning and Charting with the iTero® Scanner

  • Step 1: Setting Up a New Scan Begin by selecting “New Scan” from the home screen of the iTero® scanner. Fill in the required patient information, including their first and last name, case type, due date, and the lab the case will be sent to.
  • Step 2: Tooth Selection and Restoration Details Using the tooth diagram, choose the specific tooth number you are working on. Select the appropriate restoration type from the provided list. Complete the restoration details, including material, preparation design, and shade.
  • Step 3: Initiating the Scan Tap on the scan icon to start the scanning process. Begin by scanning the occlusal, lingual, and buckle surfaces of the opposing arch. The active scanning segment is indicated by a blue outline. Use the arrows to move to the next segment.
  • Step 4: Prepped Tooth Scanning Center the prep by placing the crosshair in the middle of the tooth. Scan the occlusal, lingual, and buckle surfaces of the prepped tooth. If needed, adjust the green dot to ensure it is precisely on the prep. Viewing the scan without color can reveal additional details.
  • Step 5: Scanning the Prepped Arch and Bite Continue scanning the occlusal, lingual, and buckle surfaces of the prepped arch. Use the arrow to move to the bite segment. When scanning the bite, ensure the patient bites in proper occlusion. Move in a wave-like motion anteriorly to capture three to four teeth and the upper and lower gingival tissue.
  • Step 6: Reviewing the Scanned Model Once the case is processed, review the digital model to ensure the complete capture of anatomy. Evaluate the bite with the opposing arch in place, and then turn off the opposing arch to focus on the prepped arch. Pay attention to contacts and the complete margin. Toggle between color and monochrome views for additional detail.

By following these steps, dental professionals can harness the power of the iTero® intraoral scanner to achieve accurate and comprehensive scans for single unit restorations. This advanced technology streamlines the scanning and charting process, improving efficiency and patient outcomes.

IOS Scanners are More Than Impression Tools

If you’re like most practices, you got a new IOS Scanner like Trios or PrimeScan and you haven’t been shown much more than just crown impressions and maybe ortho.

There’s more. Tons more. We want to help.
